Paediatrics

Child-friendly alternatives to commercially available dosage forms

With paediatric patients, commercially available products can have dosing limitations. Children often do not learn to swallow tablets and capsules until they are older, and sometimes commercially available dosage forms are unavailable, unpleasant, or bad tasting. In most cases the commercial market provides very few options with medications that are available only in a capsule or tablet form.

In these situations, compounding pharmacists can provide appropriate dosage alternatives. These include:

  • Suspensions
  • Solutions
  • Emulsions
  • Transdermal preparations
  • Lollipops
  • Gummies
  • Suppositories

The paediatric population has very specific therapeutic needs, which cannot always be met by commercially available medications. Our compounding pharmacists work closely with paediatricians and other health care providers to provide specialised alternative dosing and flavouring options to meet the needs of individual patients.
